A Mason High School teacher has been nominated for the National LifeChanger of the Year Award, and the community can help by showing their support.

Kristin Higgins, who is Mason High School’s Business and Technology Teacher, was nominated for the 2016-17 award.

The LifeChanger Award is sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, and recognizes and rewards the best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the country who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

“Higgs’, as she is known in our community, changes lives for the better every day,” said Mason High School Principal Lance Delbridge, who nominated Higgins. “Every day, she has a well=prepared lesson, high expectations for everyone and passion to engage students in learning. Ms. Higgins knows how to connect with others and is well-respected by students and staff alike.”

In addition to her teaching responsibilities which include running the school yearbook, Higgins aso coaches girls water polo, serves as the announcer for the school’s pool events and organizes events such as an annual soccer game to benefit students in Nigeria.

Delbridge added that Higgins does whatever she needs to get done, and no one in the community is surprised when she steps up to do something.

Each school year, the LifeChanger of the Year program receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. For 2016-2017, there will be a total of 15 individual LifeChanger of the Year awards. In addition, a 16th prize, the “National Spirit Award,” is given to the school and nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for their nomination. The community and students are encouraged to show support for Ms. Higgins throughout the fall. The deadline for nominations and activities showing support is January 1, 2017.

Winners will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of former winners and education professionals and will be announced via surprise award ceremonies held at their schools. The national Grand Prize award is $10,000 and the top five winners will also be honored at a national awards ceremony in Naples, Florida. Winners will be announced in Spring 2017.
