Police say a man who was spray painting vehicles in downtown Ionia assaulted an officer, and spray painted a police car before being arrested.
The Ionia Department of Public Safety reports that on Sunday, officers were notified of a man spray painting vehicle in the downtown area just before 12:30 p.m.
The department says that an officer observed the suspect, who went down Cornell Alley from Main St. An officer in a patrol vehicle went to cut the suspect off by driving through the Adams Street parking lot.
The suspect then ran up to the patrol car and spray painted on the hood before he was stopped, police say. The suspect also assaulted the officer as he was taken into custody, according to police.
The suspect was lodged at the Ionia County Jail on charges of assaulting an officer, malicious destruction of a police vehicle and malicious damage to numerous vehicles on Main Street.
The department reports the officer who was assaulted received minor injuries, but continued with his shift.
