LANSING, Mich. — A local man is speaking out after stumbling upon several dogs in cages on the side of the road.
There was a sign that said free of charge and a man standing there with them. But for this dog lover, something didn't seem right and he did something about it.
When Josh Page pulled up to the house, he saw a sign that said 'free dogs.' He said he was worried about them and decided to take the last two home with him.
"They are the most loving, adorable dogs that you can find. The female is just a big cuddle bug and likes to play with a ball and as you can see he's just chill mode."
Ghost and Penny have only been with Page for a day, but they already love him. But just 24 hours ago the pups were sitting in crates in Lansing near the road.
"When I got there they were both cowered in the corner just laying there and hoping to god someone would save them and I did," Page said.
Page said the dogs looked to be underweight, and seemed a little skittish.
"They're both undersized. He's got marks on his neck from where the collar was too tight. You could tell it's just been rubbing for a while."
FOx 47 was able to track down their former owner, Clarence Walker to get some answers. He said he didn't mean any harm and just wanted to give people some good dogs for free because he was running out of room.
"Some people say online I threw them out there like yesterday's trash. That's not the truth. They were put out there and we were all out here, free puppies. Anyone who wants a free puppy, stop and let's see," Walker said.
Walker said he talked to each person to make sure they would be a good fit, and stressed the fact that the dogs were well taken care of.
"The dogs were not malnourished. They eat good. I feed all my dogs, you feel me? I not only have dogs, I have horses, I have cows. I feed all my animals good," he said.
But Page doesn't buy it. He was able to find new homes for the dogs and is thankful they get a second chance.
"You shouldn't be able to own dogs and just put them out on the side of the road with a big sign that says 'free' and hope to go they just go wherever they go. Who knows? If I wasn't there to pick them up, would they have been there all night long?" Page said.
Page has been in contact with animal control about the situation. He says he hopes people will see this and just be nicer to animals.
Ingham County Animal Control has been to Walker's house in the past. it's illegal in Michigan to abuse, abandon, or neglect animals. Animal control is investigating to see if this qualifies under that law.
