HILLSDALE, Mich. — A man is in critical condition after an attempted murder that happened on Sunday morning in Hillsdale.

Stephen Wertz, 54, is at the University of Michigan's burn and trauma unit in Ann Arbor.

Wertz was found around 4:30 Sunday morning with a gunshot wound to his torso.

In a Facebook post, the Hillsdale Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to 2800 Balcom Rd. in Reading Township to "investigate a report of a man who had been shot."

When they arrived, they found a 54-year-old man on the deck who had a gunshot wound on his torso. Deputies performed emergency medical assistance until EMS arrived. The man was then taken to Hillsdale Community Hospital and then transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center.

55-year-old Tamra Vanbuskirk was also at the scene and is a suspect in the case.
She was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

Authorities added that Vanbuskirk was "lodged at the Hillsdale County Jail for the offenses of Assault with Intent to Commit Murder, Felony Firearm and Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated."

At this time she has not been arraigned on any charges.
