A big change is coming to one of Jackson's main roads.

West Washington Street will be converted from a one-way to a two-way road between First Street and West Avenue.

That street is a main stretch that connects Jackson's west side to downtown.

It's been a one-way street since the 1950s.

"What we would like to see happen with the conversion is returning this back to a neighborhood street where you can go both ways. It'll also help slow down traffic, make it more pedestrian friendly, and it'll also help provide better access around this neighborhood" said Jackson Public Information Officer Aaron Dimick.

For the moment, the stretch of road is only open to eastbound traffic.

Cars will be able to start traveling west on September 24th, and the road will fully open to two-way traffic on October 8th.
