PORTLAND, Mich. — More people are finding letters in the mailbox from Wolverine Solutions Group telling them their personal information has been exposed.
Jennifer Fitzpatrick had surgery on her elbow last September.
Fast-forward to last Tuesday, when she found the letter in the mail.
"I first wasn't sure what the letter was about. I was like, did they get ahold of my social security number? What was going on?" she said.
The letter was from Wolverine Solutions Group, a company that handles billing for hospitals including Sparrow and McLaren.
It says that names, addresses, dates of birth, social security numbers, insurance information and medical records were included in the files encrypted during a ransomware attack last year.
"I was really shocked because there is a lot going on with hacking recently. It's not just the Sparrow systems; there's a lot of different places. Hackers are on everything right now," Fitzpatrick said.
The company says there's no evidence leading it to believe any information was stolen. But patients tell News 10 that this is a major wake-up call.
"Keep your eyes open. Hacking is going on everywhere. It's not just your bills or your credit card paying, paying online for utilities or your online shopping. It's happening everywhere, right here at your hospitals, like going in for a simple surgery."
The letters say the data breach did not impact either hospital's servers or electronic health record systems. Wolverine Solutions Group says it hopes to have notified all customers by the end of this month. It's encouraging patients to track their bank accounts and credit reports.
Sparrow and McLaren hospitals are not commenting.
