LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) — Many will say you aren't supposed to mix church and state - however, it is Christmas and each year, Sen. Rick Jones, a Grand Ledge Republican, takes the time to put up a Nativity scene at Michigan's Capitol.
Jones sets it up on the southeast lawn and encourages everyone to come out to see it.
Annually, Jones gets a seven-day permit for the display and will personally make the trip to the Capitol each morning to put it up and then return at 9 p.m. to take it down. These are rules set up by the Capitol Commission.
This is the fifth year for Jones to set up the religious scene depicting the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
He says he does it as a citizen looking to help celebrate the true spirit of Christmas.
