Reading can be a powerful thing. FOX 47's Lora Painter finds out how local schools are working all month long during March Reading Month to encourage students to pick up a book and enjoy reading.
Studies show the amount of reading students do by the third grade can determine whether they graduate high school. A literacy coach at Steele Elementary School in Mason, Colleen Rockafellow, said, "The ability to read and write and understand text actually helps develop critical thinking skills, which will carry over from their elementary school years into their middle school and high school years."
Reading at home is also important. For parents, just 20 minutes a day of one-on-one reading time can really help children develop a love for reading and boost their vocabulary skills.
