Local schools awarded school safety grant money

LANSING, Mich. — More than 200 Michigan schools will share $25 million dollars to buy equipment and improve technology for school security. The money comes from State Police grants.

According to Michigan State Police, 135 public school districts, 66 non-public schools, 20 public charter schools and nine intermediate school districts/regional educational service agencies will receive money from the 2019 Competitive School Safety Grant Program.

The funding will be used to buy technology and equipment that will support safety and security upgrades for students, staff, and school buildings.

“Safety for our children should always be a top priority,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Every parent should have the peace of mind that their children are receiving an education that allows them to achieve their dreams under the safest possible conditions.”

Locally, these are the schools that've awarded grant money.

Ingham County
-Resurrection School ($82,887)
-Webberville Community Schools ($47,167)

Jackson County
-Napoleon Community Schools ($159,150)
-Columbia Central Schools ($122,376)
-Vandercook Lake Public Schools ($97,542)
-Northwest Community Schools ($71,017)

Eaton County
-Eaton Rapids Public Schools ($442,773)
-Potterville Public Schools ($149,844)
-St. Gerard School ($47,626)
-St. Michael Catholic School ($26,980)

Clinton County
-Ovid-Elsie Area Schools ($257,872)
-DeWitt Public Schools ($150,666)
-Clinton County Regional Educational Service Agency ($43,790)
-St. Johns Public Schools ($13,440)

In total, 366 applications were received, requesting over $46 million in funding for security enhancements.

Grant applications were reviewed by a committee and per the appropriation; priority was given to applicants who had not received school safety grant funds in the past.

Grant recipients will have until June 1st, 2020 to spend their awards.
