MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Meridian Township priest charged with embezzlement has died.
Bishop Earl Boyea announced Father Jonathan Wehrle's death in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. In it he says Wehrel died at 3 pm, and that it wasn't because of coronavirus.
Wehrle was charged with six counts of embezzling more than $100,000 from St. Martha Parish in Okemos. Auditors say the parish is missing more than $5 million. Investigators seized around $1 million from Wehrle. They say they found more than $60,000 cash in the ceiling tiles of his multi-million dollar home near Williamston.
Wehrle was 69 years old when he died.
