ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Several cities across the country are now offering payment assistance to federal workers affected by the shutdown.

Mayor Derek Dobies said he and a member of city council will bring a proposal at the council's next meeting that'll provide some relief to federal employees who haven't seen a paycheck.

The mayor said the proposal will give those workers a break on their city bills.

Due dates can also be extended for up to 60 days after the ongoing shutdown ends, but the mayor did not specify which types of city payments may be deferred.

The Ann Arbor city council passed a similar motion during it's meeting on Tuesday.

The city of Ferndale did the same thing last week.

Mayor Dobies says the proposal also directs the city administration to evaluate and implement all legal means to assist affected employees in deferring payments due to the city, which rack up during the shutdown.

He said the proposal will be brought up during the council's meeting set for next Tuesday.
