LANSING, Mich. — Some say Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s first State of the State speech was big on ideas and short on specifics.
Legislators say the real meat will come in the governor's first budget proposal next month.
Representatives on both sides of the aisle say they're on board to make Michigan better and that includes solving one of the state's top problems, fixing the roads, bridges and water systems.
“There are not republican or democratic ideas in this”, said Senator Curtis Hertel, R-East Lansing.
“We all know the roads are a problem and we all know we need to invest in them and it's time for both sides to stop talking about it and actually do it and that's what the governor's committed to doing.”
Senator Mike Shirkey, R-Jackson told FOX 47 News it’s too early in the governor’s term to comment on the future of the state’s roads.
“I don't think anybody was expecting to see specifics on the road plan tonight. She was laying out her priorities. The budget is going to be the first indication of what we're going to see there.”
Other interests among party lines were state sponsored programs and waiting to see the governor's plans to allocate funds.
“You can't just give away free community college without spending that money so I don't know where she intends to you know gather that revenue”, Sen. Barrett explained.
“I believe that we have the legislature and that is going to want to work together in a bipartisan fashion to come up with real solutions um for the problem's Michigan's facing”, said Rep. Julie Brixie, D-East Lansing.
Governor Whitmer will head to Grand Rapids Wednesday to begin what she calls her "Home for Opportunity Tour”.
She'll be talking with leaders in business and education about her plans to close the skills gap and fix the roads.
