Local ice cream store serving up controversy over name of flavor

Posted

'The Udder Side' in Jonesville has been serving Red Indian flavor ice cream for decades.

However, now it's serving up some controversy along with it.

One local woman is calling the flavor "racist and insensitive to Native American culture."

Natasha Crall first heard about the flavor when she saw it on the shop's Facebook page. "I do have Cherokee Indian heritage and that makes my blood boil."

She left a comment saying the name was racist.

Crall felt the immediate backlash online from the shop's supporters; some mocked her, others said the name wasn't racist.

The Facebook post was eventually deleted.

The owner's husband did not want to speak on camera but told FOX 47 that all this fuss over a flavor is, "absolute nonsense."

He says the name came from it's cinnamon flavor, the spice being grown in India. And he doesn't think the name is racist or insensitive at all.

The owner's husband did not tell FOX 47 whether he would change the name or not, but he did say that he sold the most of the flavor last week when the controversy started.

FOX 47's Carla Bayron will have more to the story at 10 PM.
