LANSING, Mich. — Sunday is National Girl Scout Sunday which marks the start of National Girl Scout Week.
To celebrate, a local girl scout troop visited Sparrow to spread the cheer.
Troop 30798 showed up to the hospital to give a "diaper cake" to the first girl born on National Girl Scout Sunday. The troop leader says they do all sorts of events from helping out the homeless to experimenting with robotics as a part of the organization and their motto this year.
"We really wanted to celebrate girls. Because this is the year of the girl. This is the time when girls are being bold and strong and courageous. Our theme for the year is 'Girl Scout Strong,' so we wanted to get them started really early," Nikki Frazier said.
The family says they weren't expecting the gesture, but it was a nice surprise.
"This was really really sweet of them to do," Kacie Brown said.
"It's been a challenging couple of days and this was really needed especially for her I'm sure. It's greatly appreciated. Very sweet," William Brown added.
The family just had their first child and as a former Girl Scout herself, Brown says she can see her daughter following in her footsteps.
"I could see her doing something like that. Definitely," she said.
The troop says they just wanted to do good, and learn together in the process.
"The best part is that the girls get to be involved. They get to be engaged, they know what's happening, they understand, they're excited about a new mom. They're like 'oh wow, she's going to be a Girl Scout one day.' They got to help with putting together the basket. So just that teamwork and really seeing something come to fruition from start to finish is really good," Frazier said.
March 12th marks the 107th year of Girl Scouts.
