Recent school shootings across the country are prompting lawmakers to consider legislation to strengthen school safety here in our state. It could cost schools that don't meet the requirements.
One of the bills would require all school administrators to report all threats or attempted threats to police.
Schools who fail to report would potentially lose opportunities at state grants.
The bill would allow state police to compile all submitted information into a statewide database.
Another bill have law enforcement present information to a new commission that would be formed as part of the third bill.
The school safety commission would include school leaders, a mental health professional, a high school student, legislators, and others.
Members would be appointed by the governor.
Some of the tasks of the commission would include making recommendations on things like school resource officers and surveillance technology.
