LANSING, Mich. — Legislators in Washington are trying to pass a bill that would make it illegal for drivers to pass school buses when picking up or dropping off students and it's getting a little help from Michigan.

Senator Gary Peters is co-introducing the bill with Todd Young.

The Stop For School Buses Act was introduced almost a year after two students in Montcalm County were hit by a passing car when getting off of their bus.

In another incident last year in Indiana, three siblings were killed and a fourth student was injured after a car hit them while they were getting on their bus.

Peters said, "Parents should expect their children to be safe going to and from school."

The bill would require the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to conduct a full review and report on the best practices for school buses.

NHTSA would identify illegal passing laws in every state including penalties, a review of the effectiveness of safety countermeasures, a review of driver education, and a public safety campaign.
