During Careers in Energy week, Lansing Community College showed off a program that trains students to become electric line workers.
LCC partners with Consumers Energy on the two-year program, which trains students to enter a line worker apprenticeship.
Representatives from the utility say the job is demanding but very rewarding. Guy Packard, VP, Electric Operations, Consumers Energy, said, "You've got to work 24/7, 365. so if there's a storm on Christmas, they work it. The pay is very very good. A journey line worker that comes out of the program can easily make anywhere between $75,000 and $100,000 a year.
Consumers Energy says it is currently looking to fill about 100 line worker positions.
