Michigan lawmakers are mourning the loss of state representative Peter Pettalia.
The 61-year-old republican from northern Michigan, died in a motorcycle crash on Monday.
Colleagues say he was passionate about helping the community and leaves behind a lasting legacy.
"When we look around our state today, we see optimism, we see hope. That's the record, that's the achievement, that's the service that Pete leaves behind."
Governor Rick Snyder has ordered that flags be kept at half staff Wednesday.
Petallia's chair will stay vacant until January.
He is survived by his wife and two adult children.
