Larry Nassar's boss at MSU resigns for medical reasons

Posted

The man who put restrictions on Larry Nassar following a 2014 investigation into sexual assault allegations is resigning as dean of the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. William Strampel will be going on medical leave according to MSU spokesman Jason Cody.

Strampel was Nassar's supervisor when he was investigated in 2014. MSU found no evidence that Nassar had committed a crime and decided he was performing a legitimate medical procedure on his accuser. The Ingham County Prosecutor's Office chose not to file criminal charges. Strampel placed conditions on Nassar's employment, including a requirement that another person be present when he performed procedures near sensitive body parts. Michigan State fired Nassar in 2016 for failing to abide by those conditions.

Strampel was in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for 26 years. He came to Michigan State in 1999 and has led the College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2002.

Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. That sentence won't begin until after he finishes serving time on state sex-abuse charges. Nassar pleaded guilty in Ingham and Eaton Counties. He'll be sentenced to up to 40 years in each in January.
