Lansing woman decks out home in maize and blue

Posted

It's hard to miss this Lansing home.

It's decked out in those unmistakable University of Michigan colors, in enemy territory.

It is all in good fun for homeowner Kay Howse. She's lived in Lansing for decades, and has been a Wolverine fan all her life.

"Always been a Michigan fan," she says, "don't know why, but (I) have."

And get this, Howse works for Michigan State University.

"I do the buses on Farm Lane and Mount Hope," says Howse, "and then, I park the cars like for hockey and the men's and women's basketball."

She tells me she cheers for both teams, but when they face off, you'll hear her cheer: "Go blue!"

It all started on the front porch. Howse hired a professional painter in 2013, and the project grew from there.

You can even spot the playful twist on "The Big House," spelling it instead as H-O-W-S-E, to match her last name.

She has it all, University of Michigan rocking chairs, flags and more. The home gets a pretty big response.

"I've had people stop from California and take pictures, I've had people drop things off," she says.

It has even gone a little further than that.

"I've had people stop and want to know about my store, my U of M store, that I don't have," Howse says while laughing.

Howse has had to deal with some vandalism, a big green "S" has been painted on her front rock twice now. She's hoping to find a good Samaritan to repaint her rock.

"I can't get it off, it's permanent, that's what's sad," she says.

But overall, it's been a fun experience.

"You know, if we were all the same it would be a dull world."

It's a fun way to show off her school pride.
