Lansing taking marijuana dispensary applications

The clock is ticking for dozens of medical marijuana dispensaries across the Capitol city hoping to stay in business, with the application process starting Thursday.

Lansing's new ordinance passed in September as a way to both regulate the number of stores and locations. Only 25 dispensaries will be allowed but there are currently upwards of 70 dispensaries across the city.

In order to help narrow down the selection, the city has a strict set of standards dispensaries will be scored on. Criteria include distance from residential areas, security, job creation and an owner's business experience. The city is using a point system to rank each area, with 100 being a perfect score.

"It's not about getting in first," said Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope. "It's about having a good application and business plan and it will let us know that they are going to be a good participant in the community, creating jobs, and having a positive economic impact."

The city is selecting applicants in two rounds. The first runs from Thursday to December 15, where 20 dispensaries will be selected. The city will then hold another application period to fill the five remaining spots.

Shops that apply to the city, still need to apply for a license with the state.

Last month the city opened applications for other marijuana-related businesses, including secure transporter, growing facility, and processor. As of Thursday morning, Swope says no one has applied for those businesses.
