The Lansing City Council could vote on a sanctuary city resolution at tonight's Committee of the Whole meeting.
Mayor Virg Bernero says the resolution is not necessary because Lansing is already a welcoming city to refugees and immigrants.
If the council passes the resolution, city attorney Jim Smeirtka says it may expose Lansing to possible federal criminal sanctions.
He also says creating the resolution could expose the city to liability under civil rights claims.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
