LANSING, Mich. — Lansing pets could use some fresh air, at least that's what local fire departments say.
Thanks to Invisible Fence who started Project Breathe, a pet oxygen mask program, oxygen masks for pets will be placed in each fire engine in Lansing.
The mask pack comes with three different sized masks, small, medium, and large and will be used if a pet is rescued from a fire.
According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, there are between 40 thousand and 150 thousand pets that die in house fires each year.
Most die from smoke inhalation.
This program was implemented to reduce those statistics.
Kim Jones, Invisible Fence said, "This is some child's best friend. The little boy who goes fishing with his dog. Having worked for a veterinarian, one of the hardest thing for me to tell a child was 'Scruffy isn't coming home.' If we can prevent that, that's awesome."
These masks are not only meant for cats and dogs.
The masks can be used on birds, chickens, even a hamster.
The mask will go over the pets nose and mouth.
Lansing first responders and fire departments will be receiving one pet oxygen pack this week.
