Lansing Mayor Andy Schor is asking the city council to put a proposal to sell the city market on the November ballot. The city's Planning and Parks Board will review the request before it can go to the council. The council would have to approve it by August 13 in order for it to go on the ballot. A public vote is required before the city can sell property.
Mayor Schor wants to look at selling the land along the Grand River to a private developer. The city has reduced subsidies for the market and says the building will close by the end of summer.
The owners of the Waterfront Bar & Grill, which is inside the city market building, have started a change.org petition to save the market. The petition accuses the city of making decisions about the property's future without consulting the public first.
