LANSING, Mich. — Lansing city inspectors taking a closer look at a senior apartment building after the ceiling collapses in one unit.
It's an eyesore in the middle of Lon Hayes' living room. A leaky pipe caused the ceiling to cave in at the Porter Apartments in downtown Lansing.
Hayes thought it was just furniture tipping over in the middle of the night until he saw the mess the next day.
It happened Saturday night, and Hayes was told it could be a week before it's fixed.
"I thought nothing of it, nothing disturbed me," said Lon Hayes, the Porter Apartments resident whose ceiling collapsed.
Hayes said he thought the sound came from the unit above.
"Saturday night sometime around 10 p.m., there was this crash. Sounded like a bookcase full of books fell on the floor," said Hayes.
He was in his bedroom watching TV and said he didn't feel the need to get up and check things out until Sunday afternoon.
He walked out of his room to find the hole and the rest of the ceiling on the floor.
"'OMG' and then I called the landlord. It was Sunday, I wasn't thinking, and then I called their boss, and then their boss and then finally California's emergency number," said Hayes.
FOX 47 News has tried to get a comment from the Porter Apartment office as well as their corporate office, California Commercial Investment Group. Both offices have said they have no comment at this time.
Tenants told News 10's Alani Letang this isn't the first time something like this has happened.
"Not surprised because we've had other apartments here that have had their ceilings cave in. Sadly it's going to be the same problem where they take their time in getting it fixed," said Michael Robinson, a Porter Apartment resident.
FOX 47 News checked with Lansing code compliance and found that the last inspection was in September 2017 and the complex was found to be up to code.
The city was out there on Monday, looking at four units with maintenance problems. Inspectors told us the owners are working to fix those issues.
The apartments are due for their next inspection on June 1.
