LANSING, Mich. — Yenier Conde was sentenced to no less than 66 months, but no more than ten years in prison for 2nd Degree Child Abuse.

Conde was accused of physically abusing his five children and locking them in a dark room with no food or water for extended periods of time.

He plead no contest to two counts of second-degree child abuse in Ingham County in July during his trial after three of his children took the stand against him.

During sentencing Conde broke down crying.

"This raw emotion is not one of being scared to go to prison. This is one of acknowledgment of losing his kids," Conde's lawyer Edward Zeineh said.

However, the display of emotion was not moving to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.

"It was very clear that the evidence was stacking higher and higher and higher," Andrew Stevens, from the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office, said. "I think Mr. Conde is a coward. I don't think he deserved these children. I recognize that he is the biological father of all five, but he is not a father."

In 2018, Conde and his then wife, Sarah Conde, were charged after police say they locked their children in a dark room that police have described as a dungeon.

That alleged abuse was said to have happened over several years dating all the way back to 2009 when CPS first investigated claims of improper supervision and physical neglect.

The reported the home was filthy-- soiled diapers throughout the hallway, dog feces throughout the home.

The children ranged in age from 6 to 11 years old, and investigators said they had no access to a toilet and did not have food or water in the room.

Sarah was sentenced back in July and will serve a minimum of three years with a maximum of 120 months behind bars.

Judge Canady III said she is not allowed to have any kind of contact with her children.

Yenier Conde received 66-120 months in prison and no contact with children.
