Lansing Housing Commission Director Martell Armstrong resigned Tuesday, amid criticism of the agency following a fatal fire at a housing complex that had failed an inspection.

“The executive director of the LHC has submitted his resignation to the LHC board, and Doug Fleming, an affordable housing expert, has been named interim director," said Mayor Andy Schor in a statement.

"I am confident that the important work of bringing these Lansing public housing units up to code will continue and be completed with haste. I wish Martell Armstrong the best in his future endeavors."

Mayor Schor also says the city will work with the commission to ensure safe public housing in Lansing.

The Lansing City Council voted 'no confidence' in the LHC Board of Directors in June, following a fire at the Laroy Froh Complex that killed a mother and her young son. The complex had failed a city inspection in 2016.

Mayor Schor later said he does not believe an inspection would have prevented the fire, because it started inside a wall, which is not looked at by inspectors.
