Michigan Avenue is considered the gateway between Lansing and East Lansing, but over the years it has become more of an eyesore. That's changing, with a new lighting project being turned on at the U.S. 127 underpass Tuesday.
It's the latest step in the "Under the Bridge" project that's been in the works for nearly 2 years. The project is spearheaded by the Lansing Economic Area Partnership and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, aimed at turning the overpass into a work of art.
On Tuesday at 9 p.m. 24 LED lights will be officially turned on under the bridge. The lights were installed by crews from the Board of Water and Light and can change colors.
The project also features murals by Lansing artist Brian Whitfield. He's been transforming four 50-by-25-foot concrete slabs into works of art. Whitfield is expected to finish painting the murals by mid-Fall.
Nearly half of the funding for this project came from the community, with LEAP matching that donation.
The lights will be turned on Tuesday, June 27 at 9 p.m. If you want to check it out, parking will be available in the southeast corner of the lot on the corner of Michigan and Howard.
