Lansing and East Lansing already share a fire chief. Now they're looking into merging some fire department operations. The cities announced Monday they plan to ask accounting firm Plante Moran to conduct a feasibility study into the creation of a fire authority.
The idea would be for the fire departments to share top-level leadership, equipment, training, emergency management and fire prevention. The East Lansing city council will be discussing the the agreement at Tuesday evening's meeting.
Lansing and East Lansing are part of a six-department group that has been slowly working to integrate training, supervision, equipment procurement, training and fire scene management. The others are Delhi Township, Delta Township, Lansing Township and Meridian Township.
