LANSING, Mich. — LCC will soon add another sculpture to its Downtown Campus. This fall, Upward Bound will join the more than 20 sculptures that grace the 42-acre site. Located in the center of The Hill, the sculpture will become the connecting anchor of campus.

At its highest point, Upward Bound soars more than 35 feet in the air and consists of three vertical beams in vibrant colors set on a double-layered, round concrete base. Made of rolled galvanized steel tubes with special enamel painted steel face plates, it sits on a pedestal with two surface finishes. At night, Upward Bound will illuminate campus with recessed, color-changing LED lights.

LCC President Brent Knight has devoted nearly a decade to “placemaking,” the planning, design and management of public spaces. Through renovated buildings, public art, new trees and other aesthetics, the campus has become a welcoming atmosphere where learning is not confined to the classroom.

Upward Bound was made possible through a generous gift from LCC Trustee Andrew Abood in honor of his mother, Patricia Abood, a strong advocate for education.

The sculpture was designed by the architecture firm MAYOTTEgroup Architects.
