LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Community College will hold a series of lectures entitled Arts, Artists and Advocates on three consecutive Tuesday’s in the Gannon Building’s Michigan Room beginning Nov. 5 and continuing Nov. 12 and Nov. 19. The series is a continuation of the college’s participation in the yearlong national commemoration of the 400 Years of African American History Commission Act.
LCC joined the nationwide commemoration of four centuries of African American History in the U.S. and the lecture series is the seventh event the college has held as part of its observance.
The sessions are FREE and open to the public and will begin with lunch and registration at 11:30 a.m. followed by a featured speaker from noon – 1 p.m. Topics will include, how to have a meaningful conversation about diversity and race relations; an in-depth look at a program that offers trauma sensitive yoga for Lansing area residents; and how to use music to teach cultural awareness.
Featured speakers are Dr. David Pilgrim, Curator of The Jim Crow Museum on Nov.5. Pilgrim is one of this country’s leading experts on multiculturalism, diversity, and race relations. He is best known as the founder and curator of The Jim Crow Museum, a 12,000 piece collection of racist artifacts housed on the grounds at Ferris State University. The artifacts are used to teach tolerance and promote social justice.
The series continues Nov. 12 with Tashmica Torok, Founder of The Firecracker Foundation. Torok is a nationally recognized survivor activist whose foundation supports survivors of child sexual assault. The series concludes on Nov. 19 with Ozay Moore, Executive Director of All of the Above Hip Hop Academy. Moore has performed globally and his Academy features local professionals in the world of hip hop that teaches self-discipline, community awareness, and responsibility, artistic expression and educational development.
LCC is excited to bring these discussions to the Lansing community. The hope is that the dialogue presented will challenge attendees to examine their own feelings about diversity and race relations and explore ways that they can help implement positive change.
