Lansing city council taking up marijuana ordinance

The city of Lansing could move a step closer toward regulating medical marijuana Monday.

For more than a year now council members have been trying to get an ordinance on the books, and Monday they're supposed to set a public hearing to get input on the latest draft.

Last month council approved language for an ordinance which creates licensing and zoning regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries. Currently there are between 40 and 70 dispensaries in Lansing. The city has allowed those shops to operate without much regulation since 2008, when medical marijuana was made legal in Michigan.

Regardless of when the council votes on an ordinance, it would not go into effect until the state is ready to start doing its licensing. Some council members are concerned that may not happen until 2018.

Monday's meeting starts at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. City council is expected to set a public hearing, as well as discuss any proposed changes or amendments to the ordinance.
