Another Ottawa County home demolished due to erosion

A fifth home in Ottawa County was demolished because of erosion on Wednesday.

About 30 feet of land was lost on the bluff in the area surrounding the Park Township home along Lakeshore Drive, leading the property’s owner to demolish their home.

Ottawa County officials say the latest demolition was a proactive measure and was funded by the owner. Gas services were shut off a few months ago and other utilities had been cut off recently as well.

It was the second home to be taken down on Lakeshore Drive over the last several months, as another home that was teetering on the edge of a cliff was demolished in November.

Homeowners have been working with local and state officials for months to ease the permit process for performing erosion work. In Ottawa County, five permits for demolition have been granted.

Other homeowners are considering demolition, but there aren’t any immediate plans for any in the next several days or weeks.
