Shuttered medical facility investigated for embezzlement

Michigan State Police are responding to requests to investigate Muskegon Family Care on accusations of embezzlement.

Saturday night Special Lieutenant David Cope sent the following statement:

"The Michigan State Police Rockford Post has been requested to investigate possible embezzlement involving staff members at the Muskegon Family Care facility in Muskegon Heights. There are no allegations or implications that would directly impact clients of Muskegon Family Care. The investigation is in its preliminary stages so the MSP does not have any further information to pass along at this time..."

The office of congressman Bill Huizenga released a statement to Fox 17 on early Sunday evening.

“Our office was made aware of allegations detailing gross abuse of taxpayer dollars and corruption at Muskegon Family Care. Over a year ago, our office then relayed that information to the proper authorities. Residents of Muskegon Heights, Muskegon County, and West Michigan depended on this facility to provide care. Congressman Huizenga will continue to monitor the situation and is committed to developing appropriate safeguards to protect residents of Muskegon Heights and the surrounding communities.”

The investigation started in December of 2019.

A rally was held at the facility where many gathered to implore state leadership to fix the problems encountered.

"We hope and pray that this will be taken over by another group." Anthony Cargill, a patient at Muskegon Family Care, said. "I needed a place to go that there would always be a doctor for me."

"Patients need this place." Doctor Kathy Rosema told FOX 17. "I've worked here for 3 years. A lot of people that I've worked with have been here for up to 15 years. And I love what we do. These patients need these services. I don't know where they're going to go."

Muskegon Family Care shut their doors suddenly Friday , February 14th. FOX 17 will continue to monitor this situation.
