The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo County Animal Control worked together this morning to save a puppy that was stuck in the middle of a swamp at Kleinstruck Preserve.

A Kalamazoo Public Safety officer and a Kalamazoo County Animal control officer could hear the dog barking in the middle of the marsh.

Upon seeing the struggling dog, Kalamazoo Public Safety’s rescue boat was called to the scene, due to the marsh being bordered by a 30-foot expanse of water that was more than five feet deep in some places.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers drove the boat out to reach the marsh.

Once at the marsh, an officer searched for the dog, but it was not located because it had stopped barking.

Crews stopped the search after about an hour, but just prior to leaving, the Kalamazoo County Animal Control officer could hear the dog barking again and put the boat back in the water.

Checking a different area of the marsh with waders while using a drone to search, the stranded dog was located.

Officers returned the dog to the shore.

The dog appears to be in good health, as it has been turned over to Kalamazoo County Animal Control, who will attempt to identify the dog's owner.
