Michigan State Police says its troopers in Marshall have been seeing an increase in stolen cars.
Many of the cars have been left unlocked with keys inside, making it easy for someone to get in and drive away, a news release said Wednesday.
“Criminals typically look for the easiest and quickest way to commit their crimes,” the news release said. “A surprisingly small number of vehicles are broken into by force as criminals actively look for those vehicles that have been left unlocked.”
MSP says keeping outdoor lights on at night can make it less inviting for criminals.
They also advise not leaving valuables unattended in cars and, if you’re in a public area, to keep valuables out of sight by putting them in the trunk or compartments.
Troopers urge drivers not to leave their cars running and unattended – even at places like gas stations or daycare facilities.
“It is not only illegal to do so but it invites criminals to take advantage of an easy opportunity,” MSP said. “If we all take the time to lock up our vehicles when not in use and properly store valuable items, we can greatly reduce these types of crimes.”
