Juveline offenders get second chance at freedom

Posted

At least two Michigan inmates serving life in prison for crimes they committed as juveniles will get a second chance at freedom.

Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon says her office reviewed their cases and decided not to seek life in prison without parole. This decision comes after the federal Supreme Court ruled sentencing a juvenile to life without parole is unconstitutional.

In the statement Siemon only named Robert Whitfield. The now 41-year-old was sentenced to life when he was 15-years-old and convicted in the 1993 murder of a man in Ingham County.

Siemon says Whitfield now has the opportunity to write his future.
