The Ingham County judge who sentenced former sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar spoke to a room full of people Tuesday about preventing domestic violence and sexual assault.
Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was the keynote speaker at a fundraising luncheon for the Michigan State Medical Society Alliance.
While many wanted to know more about the Nassar case, Aquilina hopes those in attendance took away the bigger message.
"Doctors have so much contact with people that they should really change the mantra they are using so that when they are doing patient interviews, they're making a safe space there so that their patient can talk to them about what's actually happened, whether it's incest, rape, assault, domestic violence, they're being trafficked," Aquilina said.
Proceeds from Tuesday's event will be donated to YWCA programs in Michigan that are addressing domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.
