JACKSON, Mich. — A Jackson County judge sentenced Daisha Cooper to 9-15 years in prison for killing her boyfriend.

Cooper shot Ben Johnson to death in Jackson on May 8, 2016.

Prosecutors say she ambushed him with a shotgun on the front porch because she thought he was cheating on her. Cooper's lawyers claimed she grabbed the shotgun in self-defense because Johnson had been abusing her. They argued the gun fired accidentally.

The jury in her first trial in 2017 acquitted her of first-degree murder but found her guilty of felony firearms. The jury could not reach a verdict on second-degree murder.

The jury in Cooper's second trial convicted her of involuntary manslaughter in January 2019. In addition to the 9-15 years on the manslaughter count, the judge gave Cooper two years for the felony firearms conviction.
