Jackson County ranks 15th in the state in population, and 7th in traffic deaths. That's according to a new report Thursday, from the Office of Highway Safety Planning.

37 people were killed in car accidents in 2017 and more than 2,000 people were injured. The same year in Ingham County, 26 people died in traffic crashes.

The Michigan State Police says most accidents don't happen on the highway. MSP Lt. Jim Flegel said, "Generally the places where the most traffic crashes occur are on local streets and high-density areas. There's more people there's more traffic, there's more people creating errors out there."

Statewide, deaths from car crashes decreased three percent in 2017 compared with 2016.
