LANSING, Mich. — Police officers are working on a new initiative to help combat gun violence in the city of Jackson.

City leaders took a closer look at the growing trend of shootings and other gun crimes over the past three years.

From 2016 to 2018, crimes have increased , but Mayor Derek Dobies said the same 120 people are responsible for more than half of those crimes.

So, Jackson Police plan to focus on those specific individuals as part of the initiative.

"Part of our effort are not only to go after those people but also the people that are associating with them to stop the pipeline of young people in the city of Jackson that are picking up a gun and using it to communicate in our neighborhoods," Mayor Dobies said.

For 2019, there are only statistics through April, but city leaders say it appears the number of shootings during that time is lower than last year.
