JACKSON, Mich. — Jackson police said it is giving away free gun locks to the community, in an effort to stop guns from being stolen and keep them out of the hands of kids.

As of Thursday, the department said it has 100 locks to hand out. They are a cable-style that runs a cable through the action of the firearm and locks with a key.

"Responsible gun ownership includes proper storage in order to prevent accidents, theft, and misuse. We hope this will make an impact in gun safety in our community,” said Jackson Police Chief Elmer Hitt.

The locks are available in the lobby of the Jackson Police Department, 216 E. Washington Ave. Lobby hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
