Thursday night there were new calls for Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand to resign.

The Jackson Human Relations Commission invited people to sound off on the scandal.

“He's a human being”, says Leland Prebble from Springport.

“He admits that he messed up and is sorry for it you know.”

Other people disagree, they say he's only sorry he got caught.

“I don't believe that this is locker room conversation”, said resident Brenda Pilgrim.

It's a recorded conversation with Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand making racist statements and derogatory comments about women and people with disabilities.

“We have people like Sheriff Rand, which is a problem throughout our nation”, said 70-year-old long-time Jackson resident James Kelley.

“We have police officers who are the problem and sheriff rand is the problem.”

The Jackson Human Relations Commission now joins the city council and county commissioners calling for the sheriff to resign.

“I have known him so it was surprising to me”, said HRC Chair Alice Lewis.

“It was disappointing and I just can't seem to digest it.”

The HRC will now send a letter to the governor requesting for the state to step in and remove Rand from office.

Sheriff Rand has since apologized for his comments.

He says he has no plans of stepping down.
