After a special city council meeting Thursday night the city of Jackson and the Summit Jackson Professional Firefighters' Union have agreed on a new contract.
The new contract will increase firefighters' wages, make changes to health insurance plans, and reform pensions.
The safer grant did not come up at the meeting.
The nearly $1.7 million grant would allow the city to hire nine new firefighters.
The city said it would not accept it if the union did not agree on a contract by this past Sunday.
However, city manager Patrick Burch says the grant isn't off the table just yet.
