JACKSON, Mich. — The Jackson County Health Department is cutting the price of radon testing kits in January, which is National Radon Action Month. Radon is an invisible, odorless gas known to cause cancer. The health department says it's the second-leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking.

Radon seeps into homes through the ground and can build up to dangerous levels over time. Jackson County is selling kits that sample the air in your home for 3-7 days. They're normally $11 but are on sale for $5 through January. Long-term kits that test the air for 3-12 months can be found online and at many hardware or home improvement stores.

Homes with high radon levels can be fixed with a ventilation system that costs anywhere from $800 to $3,000 depending on the size, age and style of the house.
