JACKSON, Mich. — The U.S. Senate has voted unanimously to re-open the government.

The House is expected to pass it soon.

However, it won't happen in time to get federal workers the paychecks they missed on Friday.

Both the city of Jackson and Consumers Energy announced plans to help workers before the deal to end the shutdown happened.

They say the benefits will still be available even after President Donald Trump signs the bill.

Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies says in next week's City Council meeting, they will talk about ways to soften the financial blow for government employees.

"What we are trying to do is do whatever we can at the city to lessen that harm," Dobies said.

After the president's announcement to end the shutdown, Dobies said that those affected will still need more time to catch up on payments.

"Working with city administration, I think we are going to be able to help people and we will explore any avenues necessary to help the affected residents," Dobies said.

Consumers Energy is also making plans to give furloughed workers a break on their utility bills.

"Every family is different, every customer is different. Whether they are an electric customer or a gas customer or a combination customer, we want to find a good path forward for them," said Katie Carey, of Consumers Energy.

The company plans to work with its customers to let them get squared away.

"So, each family is different. You can pay either a little bit each month and then catch back up when you have your paycheck, or if it's something that you just need a 30-day bill extension," said Carey.

DTE is also helping customers who were furloughed during the shutdown.
