Members of the Jackson City Council decided to postpone a vote on a recreational marijuana ordinance.
It would ban businesses that have anything to do with the drug from operating in the city.
FOX 47 News's Cryss Walker was at the meeting where people turned out to voice their opinions.
If voters support recreational marijuana this November will the city of Jackson ban businesses from setting up shop?
“We've discussed with the city attorney, city manager about passing an ordinance that would prohibit marijuana establishments if the new law was to take effect”, Jackson Director of Police and Fire Elmer Hitt told Cryss Walker.
That was the hot button issue at Tuesday's Jackson City Council meeting, but members decided to wait to address the issue.
Mayor Derek Dobies says he wants to see how voters will respond to the measure before making a decision.
“We want to respect the will of the voters”, Dobies said.
“I think we want to respect the will of the voters on medical marijuana as well as whatever comes out this November.”
Instead, the Jackson City Council passed a motion to draft an ordinance for medical marijuana establishments.
“Starting to draft a policy on an ordinance of what that looks like for medical marijuana facilities in the city of Jackson, how they're going to be zoned, where they're going to be allowed and what sort of stipulations”, Dobies explained.
The Jackson City Council will present a draft for a medical marijuana ordinance at a meeting set for November 13th.
