JACKSON, Mich. — The Jackson City Council is trying to figure out how much it will have to raise water rates, to meet the state's new tough drinking water standards.

The council voted to direct the City Manager to investigate Tuesday night.

The city projects it will cost $171 million to dig up water service lines and replace those made of lead.

The state's mandate is unfunded and comes in reactions to the Flint Water Crisis.

A vote on Jackson's water rate increase is set to take place later this spring.
