Ingham County expands prescription pill drop off program

Posted

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office is expanding its prescription pill drop off program. It started in August when the Sheriff's Office and the Lansing Police Department partnered to put bins at several local high school football games.

Fans left more than 200 pill bottles in bins at 6 games from August through October. Last Saturday a total of 802 pounds of unused prescription drugs were dropped off at State Police posts around Michigan.

The next step for Ingham County will be to put a bin at Dansville schools during parent-teacher conferences on November 8 and 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The idea is to get unused prescription pills, especially opioids, disposed of properly before they can be abused.

Studies have shown many heroin addicts get started with leftover pills from the family medicine cabinet. The Sheriff's Office is also looking into partnering with local businesses to have drop off bins there as well.

FOX 47 News will continue to cover the fight against the opioid epidemic and will let you know when new bin locations are announced.
