Ingham Co. Sheriff warns of phone scam

Posted

Beware of a phone scam where the caller states he is from the Ingham County Sheriff's Office.

Monday, Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth sent out this warning to residents. He states that the caller even uses a 517 area code phone number.

According to Wriggelsworth, the caller states that the person he is calling has missed jury duty and needs to send money right away to avoid being arrested or having a warrant executed. The callers have requested credit card numbers, PayPal, and Green Dot cards for payment.

Sheriff Wriggelsworth wants to remind all residents that the Sheriff's Office does not call persons with warrants for their arrest, or request money to avoid arrest.

And, residents should not send money when requested by phone to anyone that they do not know their exact identity or have accounts with.

Scammers have the ability to use phone apps to disguise their phone numbers and identity in order to run these scams.

Lastly, if you receive a call like this, advise the caller you know this is a scam and hang up.
